Kwikset Locks Can Be Kwik-Picked

August 5, 2013 admin

Did you see the story in Wired about about how Kwikset Smartkey locks are vulnerable to hacking? If this story is true, it means that the 20 million Kwikset locks sold every year are not as secure as homeowners think. Two guys, Marc Weber Tobias and Toby Bluzmanis, have demonstrated how they are able to pick the locks using a screwdriver and a paper clip. In fact, they demonstrated six different ways to pick the locks – in as little as 30 seconds.

The story includes a video showing how they did it. While I applaud the effort to inform us good people of the problem, I’m not so sure it’s a good idea to tell the bad people how to do it.

So be sure to pick a good lock (pun intended).
